How we work, step by step

Before you commit, you want to know how long it takes, how much of your time it needs and what happens when. Here's how a website design project runs with Coal Marketing: four stages, realistic timelines and your sign-off at every step, whether you're near Montpellier, France, or several time zones away.

Discover: your goals and your customers

It starts with a conversation, on a video call or face to face if you're near Montpellier. We talk about your business, your customers, your competitors and, above all, what the website needs to bring in: calls, quotes, bookings or sales. We look at:

  • Your current site and its analytics, if you have them.
  • Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how customers find you today.
  • What your customers search for, and who shows up for those searches.
  • Your constraints: budget, launch date, tools you already use.

No 30-page specification needed: we build the scope together from that conversation. Timeline: 2 to 5 days. You receive: a one-page brief, the scope, a schedule and a free, itemised quote.

Strategy and content

Before designing anything, we decide what each page has to say, and to whom. This is the step that separates a pretty website from one that brings in customers.

  • The sitemap: the list of pages and how they connect.
  • One main keyword per page, based on what your customers actually search for.
  • The copy, written or reworked with you, page by page.
  • A list of photos and videos to gather, and what we can produce ourselves.

Timeline: 1 to 2 weeks. You approve: the sitemap and the copy, before design starts.

Design and build

We design the key pages first, for mobile and then desktop. Once you've approved the designs, we build the site from scratch: fast and ready for Google, rather than a generic theme.

  • Designs to approve before any code is written.
  • A staging version on a private link, to test the site in real conditions.
  • A simple editor for your content, if your project includes one.
  • Testing on phones, tablets and computers: speed, forms, layout.

Reviews happen through a link, with no software to install: it's the same idea as the private approval page we built for the Montpellier agency of La Maison des Travaux.

Timeline: 2 to 4 weeks for a brochure site, 4 to 8 weeks or more for an online store or web app. You approve: the designs, then the staging site.

Launch and grow

Launch day is prepared, not improvised:

  • Domain, HTTPS and, for a redesign, redirects from your old URLs.
  • Sitemap submitted, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools set up.
  • GA4 with your key events: quote requests, calls, bookings.
  • Your Google Business Profile updated with a link to the new site.
  • A walkthrough of how to update your content day to day.

After launch we stay close: we monitor the first weeks, offer maintenance if you want it and, when you're ready to grow, help with ads, local SEO and social media. The Kalao Pizza site, for example, has been live and maintained by us since 2025.

Timeline: 1 to 3 days to go live, then close monitoring over the first weeks. You receive: a site you own, with your domain and your content.

How long does a website take?

Here are typical timelines, stage by stage. Some stages overlap: technical set-up (domain, hosting, tracking) runs alongside the content work.

Indicative timelines, assuming content arrives on time and feedback comes within a few days.

Strategy and content1 to 2 weeks1 to 2 weeks
Design and build2 to 4 weeks4 to 8 weeks or more

Content weighs most on these timelines: the sooner it arrives, the sooner your site goes live. We'll also tell you as soon as the schedule is at risk. For budgets, see our guide to what a small business website costs.

What we need from you

Less than you might think: mostly your goals and a little of your time. Plan on an hour or two a week for calls, reviews and approvals.

  • What you sell, to whom and where, and the action the site should drive: a call, a quote, a booking or an order.
  • Your existing assets: logo, photos, text, brand guidelines if you have them.
  • A few websites you like, and some you don't: both help.
  • Access where needed: domain, current hosting, Google Business Profile, Google Analytics.
  • One person to sign off, with feedback grouped rather than drip-fed.

Missing copy or photos? That's not a blocker: we can write the copy with you and, around Montpellier, organise a photo or video shoot. To prepare, our guide on how to make a website for your business lists the pages every small business site needs.

FAQ

What people ask us most.

What can delay a website launch?

Most often, content: text, photos or a logo that arrive late. Then come slow approvals, feedback scattered across several people and features added mid-project. To avoid this, we agree a schedule at the start, group feedback by stage and tell you as soon as a deadline is at risk. A typical brochure site takes 3 to 8 weeks; an online store or web app, 6 to 12 weeks or more.

What do you need from me to start a website project?

Mostly your goals and a little of your time. A short brief helps: what you sell, who your customers are, which actions the site should drive (calls, quotes, orders), websites you like, and existing assets such as your logo, photos and texts. Missing content can be written and produced as part of the project. A kickoff call then turns all this into a scope, a schedule and a detailed quote.

Can I see the site before it goes live?

Yes. You first approve designs for the key pages, then review the complete site on a staging version behind a private link. You can test it on your phone, share it with your team and send us your comments. Nothing is published until you give the go-ahead.

What happens after launch?

We keep a close eye on the first weeks: indexing on Google, forms, analytics and any fixes. You know how to update everyday content yourself, and you can hand us the maintenance: updates, backups and small improvements. Your domain, content and site stay yours. When you want to grow faster, we can also run your ads, local SEO and social media.

Can the whole project run remotely?

Yes. We work through video calls, email and shared designs, and you approve each stage online. That's how we work with businesses elsewhere in France and abroad, in English or French, with call times adapted to your time zone. Around Montpellier, we can also meet in person or come over for a photo or video shoot.
